Entry Matting and the First Six Metres of a Retail Centre
By Daniels Slip Testing

Rain walked in from the car park is the single biggest slip variable in a shopping centre. The first six metres of floor decide how far it travels.
In a retail centre, water rarely arrives from a burst pipe. It walks in on shoes. On a wet Sydney morning, thousands of pedestrians can carry moisture well past the entry doors onto hard, highly polished trafficable surfaces.
Design the transition zone
Effective entries use a sequence: external scraper grating, an internal primary mat and then a transition to the main floor finish. Cutting this sequence short pushes water further into the centre, where the finish was never chosen for wet performance.
Test where people actually walk
Desire lines through an entry are not symmetrical. Testing should follow the paths shoppers take from the car park lifts and travelators, including the turns where weight transfers sideways.
- Check slip resistance both at the entry and six to ten metres inside it.
- Reassess after any re-polish or re-seal of the main floor.
- Match cleaning schedules to weather, not just to time of day.
The cost comparison
Upgrading matting and adjusting a cleaning roster is a small operational cost against a single claim, and it is far less disruptive than replacing a trafficked floor finish.
